Sensor readings look wrong

A reading that doesn’t match how you feel is unsettling — a high resting heart rate on a calm morning, an overnight temperature that swings for no reason you can name. Most of the time this is fixable in a minute, and your data isn’t broken. Here’s what’s usually going on.

Check the fit first

The Belle Ring reads from the underside of your finger, so the sensors need steady skin contact. Wear it snug enough that it won’t spin freely, with the small sensor bumps facing your palm. Belle recommends your index or middle finger — the sizing kit exists because fit is the single biggest cause of noisy readings.

If the ring slides around or leaves a gap, your size is probably off. How Belle Ring sizing works walks through measuring again, and you can swap sizes within your return window.

Cold hands throw off the numbers

Blood flow drops when you’re cold, and the optical sensor needs blood flow to read heart rate and HRV. A daytime reading taken with cold hands will look wrong. Warm your hands and check again. This is also why your overnight readings — when you’re warm, still, and asleep — are the most reliable ones the ring takes, and the ones the app weights most.

Skin temperature is relative, not a thermometer

The ring doesn’t tell you “you are 36.7°C.” It tracks how your temperature moves against your own baseline, because that shift is what changes predictably with progesterone across your cycle. A single number read in isolation will look strange. The trend across several days is the actual signal — one odd morning is noise, not a malfunction.

Give it time to learn you

In your first month, early readings will look off because the ring hasn’t built your baseline yet. There’s nothing to compare a reading against until it knows your normal. The ring takes about a month to learn your physiology, and the app needs 2–3 cycles before its cycle patterns settle. This part isn’t a bug — it’s the ring doing what it should.

Still looks wrong?

If fit, warmth, and time aren’t the issue, work through these:

  • Wipe the inside of the ring with a dry cloth — skin oils and lotion can dull the sensors.
  • Charge it fully and let it re-sync; a low battery can produce gaps and spikes.
  • Open the app, pull to refresh, and confirm it’s on the latest firmware.

If a reading is still clearly off after all that — a flat line, an impossible value, a sensor that never reads — that may be a hardware fault, and it’s covered. Email returns@bellehealth.co with what you’re seeing and we’ll sort it out.
