The science behind Belle

When Belle shows you a pattern in your cycle, you should be able to ask „where does that come from?” and get a real answer. This is that answer — the measurements, the frameworks, and the research behind what Belle tells you, including the parts the science can’t do yet.

What the ring measures

The Belle Ring tracks four signals continuously, day and night:

  • Heart rate and heart rate variability — how much your nervous system is reacting moment to moment
  • Skin temperature, which shifts predictably as progesterone rises and falls across your cycle
  • Sleep stages and sleep quality
  • Movement and resting time

None of these is a hormone reading — no wearable measures estrogen or progesterone directly. What the ring captures is the downstream physiology: the body changes that track with your hormones. Over about a month, it learns what „normal” looks like for you, so it can tell when something shifts.

The frameworks behind the insights

Belle doesn’t invent its own scoring. It uses the same validated instruments clinicians use, so the patterns it surfaces are ones your doctor recognizes.

  • For PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder), Belle is built on the PSST and DRSP — the Premenstrual Symptoms Screening Tool and the Daily Record of Severity of Problems. These are the symptom questionnaires a psychiatrist uses to diagnose PMDD.
  • For perimenopause, Belle stages where you are using STRAW+10, the reproductive-aging framework that maps the transition from regular cycles through to menopause.
  • For PCOS, Belle references the Rotterdam criteria, the standard checklist clinicians use to identify polycystic ovary syndrome.
  • For menopause care, Belle follows the NICE 2024 guidelines, the UK clinical standard for what good menopause treatment looks like.

When you log a symptom and the ring records a physiological change at the same time, Belle has two layers of evidence — what you felt and what your body did — measured against a framework a clinician already trusts.

The research behind it

Belle’s models are developed with researchers at Cambridge, Marburg, and TU München. That partnership is the reason Belle can connect a temperature curve or an HRV dip to a cycle phase with any confidence — the link between those signals and hormonal events is what the research establishes.

What the science can’t do yet

Honesty here is the point. A few limits worth knowing:

  • The ring needs about a month to learn your baseline. Before that, it’s still calibrating.
  • The Cycle App needs 2–3 cycles before it can predict your patterns, because two data points aren’t a pattern.
  • Belle doesn’t diagnose anything. It gives you data and pattern recognition; a diagnosis is between you and your clinician.
  • Population research is built on averages, and your cycle is its own thing. The textbook 28-day cycle is closer to 29.3 on average, with a normal range of 21–35 days — and yours may sit anywhere in or near that.

What you get from all of this is the thing other apps skip: insights you can take to an appointment and have hold up, because they’re built on the same instruments and research your clinician respects.
